Our annual publication, The Big Smoke, has been published every year since 1969. All back issues are available, earlier ones may be photocopies.

The original Big Smoke was the Locke High School annual for the year 1923, edited by Stuart Bradley, who was the only graduate that year. It is believed the book was named for Chief Big Smoke, a Kalispell Indian. Stuart reprised the book as a collection of schoolmate's memories for a school reunion. From that new beginning, he expanded it to a county-wide compilation of historical stories, written by homesteaders and later the generations who applied the pioneer spirit to their own eras in Pend Oreille County. Stuart Bradley edited the Big Smoke until 1989. June Hobbs served as editor in 1989 and William Piper was editor until 2010. His daughter Yvonne Piper has now taken over.
